Shoot RAW — always
RAW files hold all the sensor data your camera captures. This gives you full control over exposure, white balance, and shadow recovery in post-processing without any quality loss. JPEGs bake those decisions in at capture and cannot be undone. Every professional shoots RAW.
Use a grey card at the start of every session
One photo of an 18% grey card per lighting setup lets you set a precise custom white balance in Lightroom or Photoshop. This alone can eliminate colour correction entirely on a consistent studio shoot — saving you 20–30 minutes per batch.
Batch-process first, retouch second
Sort your images into groups by lighting setup, then apply base corrections (exposure, WB, lens correction) as a batch before touching individual images. Work from macro to micro — it is always faster.
Learn non-destructive editing — it will save your career
Always use adjustment layers in Photoshop or virtual copies in Lightroom. Every change should be reversible. Editing directly on pixels is a dead end — one client change request and you are starting over.
Calibrate your monitor — seriously
If your monitor is uncalibrated, your colour corrections look different on every other screen. Invest in a hardware calibrator and calibrate monthly. This is the single biggest thing most photographers never do — and it shows in their inconsistent deliveries.
