When You Need Masking vs. Background Removal
If your subject has clean, hard edges and is going onto a white or solid background, standard background removal with a clipping path is almost always the better choice — it is faster, more precise for hard edges, and produces the cleanest result. If your subject has fine hair, transparent elements, or soft edges, or if the composited result needs to place the subject convincingly into a photographic background rather than a solid colour, masking is required. Fly-away hairs photographed against a plain, well-lit background can be isolated reliably. The same hair photographed against a complex background is genuinely difficult and will require more manual work.
Can you mask a subject from a complex or busy background?
Yes, but complex backgrounds increase the difficulty and the price of the masking work. When hair or fine detail is photographed against a background with similar tones or colours, clean separation requires significant manual work at the pixel level. We will quote accordingly. For ongoing product photography, we always recommend shooting against a plain background for this reason.
Can you preserve reflections in glass products that are being masked?
We can preserve the transparency and internal detail of glass products and recreate or adjust reflections to suit the destination background. Full reflection replacement — creating new, realistic reflections that match the destination scene — is possible but requires more complex compositing work. This is discussed and quoted as part of the project brief.
What format should I send my images in for masking work?
High-resolution JPEG, TIFF, or RAW formats all work. Higher resolution gives us more pixel data to work with at the edge, which improves fine detail like hair.
